Environment

As part of our ESG Pledge we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint

Carbon reduction and sustainability

Decarbonization is a major focus of SATEBA’s environmental strategy, as part of our ESG Pledge.

This includes SATEBA sleeper production targets of 10% carbon reduction by 2026 and a 30% carbon reduction by 2030.

In addition to our product targets and achieving industry accreditation, SATEBA UK is also committed to actively improving ways of working, processes and general everyday habits, to help reduce waste and improve efficiency in a responsible way. Watch the video opposite for further information >

Product innovations

Our specialist research and development team have formulated pioneering sustainable sleepers using the latest technology, resulting in new profiles with less material, incorporation of fibres and materials with high performance properties.

Other developments include products made using recycled steel and decarbonated cement known as green cement with the lowest possible clinker content.

Each sleeper has a validated carbon value (EPD), guaranteeing a reduced CO2 impact. Contact us for further details.

Recycle and reuse

Over the past 12 months (up to November 2025) 98.2% of waste generated at SATEBA UK was diverted from landfill. In the most part, the material was recycled.

Precast concrete is highly recyclable, so often used as hardcore for housing or backfill for highway projects. SATEBA UK crush waste precast concrete onsite for local use.

SATEBA UK have significantly reduced paper usage in favour of digital documents and filling by using a system called Smart Factory that provides traceable activities for products, processes and logistics.

Progress is monitored via monthly reporting (both locally and group wide). Then routinely reviewed in leadership meetings detailing target v actual usage percentages, with tonnage data confirmed on an annual basis.

Reducing miles

Aggregate used in the production of our precast concrete products is supplied from quarries no further than a 37 mile radius of our site. We often use aggregate from a quarry just 11 miles away.

This reduces road miles and fuel usage to help support a lower carbon footprint.

We also give preference to local suppliers of products and services to ensure that minimal distances are travelled and to help support our local communities.

Reduced energy consumption

The SATEBA UK batching plant and Shed 63 were built to the latest modern standards, in recent years, with innovative, monitoring systems to help improve energy usage. This includes a live reporting tool to monitor site wide energy consumption.

SATEBA UK also engage in ongoing initiatives related to the reduction of its energy use, associated with the production process.

The credibility of systems and activities to improve energy efficiency carried out by SATEBA UK are reinforced through ISO 50001 Energy Management certification, which the company has achieved.

Water usage

Two large rainwater-harvesting tanks, behind production Shed 63, capture rainwater to use in the production process for steam curing large precast concrete units at SATEBA UK. This is closely monitored to see how much is used versus towns water and reviewed as part of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management certification.

The carbon reductions associated with reduced electricity and towns water usage will allow contribution towards the carbon emission reduction targets.

Waste

Our systems for reducing energy, materials and waste have been awarded ISO 14001 certification, demonstrating our commitment to sustainability and care, for the environment around us.

SATEBA UK are currently carrying out a comprehensive waste management project to upgrade our systems to be even better at reducing our waste. A series of processes will be put in place to measure, report, re-evaluate and improve results.

Research and investment

An ongoing program of improvements including carbon reducing initiatives are being investigated, researched and trialled together both at SATEBA UK and with our parent company SATEBA.

These include, but not limited to, carbon negative aggregate substitutes, cement alternatives, fibre reinforcements and recycled steel, as mentioned in the introduction to this section.

To help grow the business and ensure our commitment to reducing environmental impact, at the end of 2023 SATEBA acquired VAPÉ RAIL. A company renowned for rail accessories including fastenings, track environment products and digital monitoring systems.

With a strong ethos on innovation to enable reusing, repurposing and recycling, VAPÉ RAIL are a perfect partner to reinforce the circular economy journey of the SATEBA Group. This will come to fruition with the joint launch of ECOTRACK™ a campaign dedicated to the reuse of track products – watch out for further updates on this initiative.
